1. Barnett Whitetail Hunter Crossbow

Barnett Whitetail Hunter Crossbow

Highlight: Soft Lok Floating Bristle Arrow Retainer, Anti-Dry Fire (ADF) Trigger System, Finger Safety reminders, TriggerTech Frictionless Release Technology.

Constructive Review: 2nd year, 2nd deer. I’m a new hunter. My buddy did days of research and landed on this. I couldn’t find something that looked better in the price range, so I also went with the Whitetail Hunter STR. Glad I did. Consistently impressed. Good scope, very rugged design, easy to set up and use, easy to maintenance, fine to get wet, very accurate, holds zero, detachable quiver with built in broadhead wrench, aftermarket straps aren’t expensive, great pattern and style, not too heavy, very ergonomic, easy to cock (just make sure you cock it all the way, not hard to do.) The more built-in style stirrup design is way better, more compact and rugged than traditional stirrups. Safety operates well. Literally zero complaints after pretty heavy use in warm, cold, wet conditions, going through lots of thick foliage, etc. I wouldn’t buy any other model even close to its price range, there’s just no reason to. Go for this. -Jan Kader

Trending Review: I have never owned or even shot a crossbow. I researched all the US made crossbows. I am not wealthy by any means, so I went with the Barnett Whitetail Hunter STR. I didn’t want to spend too much money on a weapon I never had a chance to experience. Now I see that it was money well spent. I was very impressed with the ease of assembly. I was also totally impressed with the ease of sighting the scope in. I started at ten yards just to make sure I didn’t miss the whole target and bag the cat or dog. I then backed out to 20 yards and was hitting very close to center after a very few adjustments to the elevation and windage.

I backed out to forty yards and I shot the three bolts pictured. I am so excited to take this bow whitetail hunting in my home state of Tennessee. This crossbow seems very fast and accurate compared to my old PSE Citation compound from years ago when I could pull back a bow. That brings up another point, I considered getting a crossbow with a cranking device because of my age (62) and the surgery on my shoulder years ago that ended my compound bow hunting. I have no problem cocking this crossbow with the rope cocking device supplied with the crossbow. I may not be very knowledgeable about crossbows, but I am very satisfied with the experience I have had so far with this Whitetail Hunter STR. -J. Childers

Reassuring Review: From unboxing to bullseyes in 30 minutes! Seriously, open the box, one set screw and you are ready. My Xbow was knocking down dimes at 25 yards straight out of the box. After some tiny adjustments it’s driving tacks! Some are saying it is loud, however, I don’t feel like it is. I’ve shot many different xbows and this one is on par with them all and maybe quieter. With the speed it shoots, you will be putting the bolt through the deer before they hear it, but to be on the safe side I added some “Allen limb dampeners” bought on Amazon. I love the camo pattern. Scope is good, not great, but you don’t need anything bigger or better, this scope is adequate for the job at hand. My only complaint, but not one big enough to deduct a star, is the stock is a tick too short for me. Even with the butt pad adjusted to the max it’s about an inch to short (I’m 5’10” with average arm length), the scope sits on a rail that can be adjusted for better eye relief but I would rather have the extra length on the stock ( personal preference). The STR or step through riser is quite nice and more visually stimulating than the traditional foot stirrup.

Overall amazing xbow for the beginner or expert hunter. -@ChipHelton

2. RAVIN Crossbow Package

RAVIN Crossbow Package

Highlight: Expert-tested and hunter-approved, these five crossbows stand out in 2026 for their power, precision, and real-world reliability.

Constructive Review: I have shot compound bows for thirty years and due to torn shoulder I needed to use a crossbow this season. I researched what I should buy for weeks and all of that research paid off. This crossbow is accurate and has many features that make you feel that you have a high quality, well designed crossbow in your hands. The accuracy and quality is more than I could have expected.
Once you have gone thru the directions on how to set up and sight this is a very accurate and easy crossbow to use. The only slight I have is that they could design an easier way to uncock the weapon it would be safer. You have to be careful uncocking this weapon. As long as you are focused it is no issue. A lapse in focus could cost you damage to the crossbow or your hand.
Great product and I would suggest this to anyone who is interested in crossbows. Spend the money to get performance and accuracy. -Curt

Trending Review: This crossbow is powerful, accurate and deadly. I have hit targets out to 80 yards no problem. It is expensive but you get what you pay for. It is extremely accurate even after sitting all offseason. I am considering another Ravin Crossbow after enjoying this one so much, the R20 with sniper package, to hit hogs out at 150 to 200 yards. -Surveyor

Reassuring Review: This is one of the best purchases I have ever made. It is precisely what I was looking for. It is easy to use and extremely accurate. This company also has a great customer service. I made the mistake to dry shoot it and was able to bring it to their customer service where it was repaired within 1 hour. To me, it is all about how the customer is treated if they have problems. Ravin is a 10 out of 10. -Tyboetracy

3. Cobra System Self Cocking Pistol Tactical Crossbow

Cobra System Self Cocking Pistol Tactical Crossbow

Highlight: Cobra System Self cocking crossbow and great for both hunting and target shooting.

Constructive Review: They are perfect. I had no issues with assembly, it’s just 2 steps. I noticed some said they had trouble stringing the bow, I did not because I have a stringer for my standard crossbows, so I tied a knot in it to use to help string these.

That would be the only suggestion I would have for the company…add a stringer for folks that don’t have one. I’m older now and its harder for me to cock my standard crossbow but these are very easy!! Also make sure y’all get some bow wax, it also is not included, and you need it, this will keep you from fraying or breaking your string. THESE ARE NOT TOYS!! They are very powerful, I’m very impressed and love how lightweight yet durable they are made!! Go ahead and invest in extra bolts, you will need them, these are smaller so they get lost easily and bend, if you land something solid!! -sherry dale

Trending Review: Ever since I saw the guy with a Mohawk in the movie “The Road Warrior” shoot that little crossbow many years ago, I’ve always wanted one. I bought one in the 80’s at a gun show, but the technology just wasn’t quite there back then and it turned out to be a disappointment. So I have shied away from small crossbows ever since. Just recently I stumbled across this one and was pleasantly surprised when I saw it in action in the videos. I was still apprehensive, but I decided I’d go for it anyway.

The gamble paid off, this little crossbow is very cool. It’s not going to take down a large mammal for those big game hunters, but it is more than capable of taking down small game. This is not a toy, so be careful if you are purchasing it for someone younger. That being said, it would make a great starter crossbow to introduce friends/family to the sport of crossbows. Whether you are target practicing or using it for small game, this surprisingly powerful little machine will get the job done. -Christopher

Reassuring Review: My bf loved this! I gave it to him for a bday gift and let’s just say we already have to get more arrows. My 6-year-old daughter was even able to use it with him. I guess the only issue for us was there just isn’t enough arrows 😛 We will have to absolutely stock up on them. We live in the mountains so we lose a lot. I recommend bright colored arrows. The gold and black ones are very easy to lose. -Tashs

4. Bear X Desire XL Self-Cocking Pistol Crossbow

Bear X Desire XL Self Cocking Pistol Crossbow

Highlight: Engineered for top-of-the-line speed, extreme accuracy, and dependability.

Constructive Review: I got this crossbow for my husband so we could shoot in our backyard. He uses this while I shoot my bow and arrows. It’s a fun bonding evening.

He was able to assemble this crossbow in our living room using the supplied tools. It did take both of us to get the string installed, but it was not an issue. It’s shot as expected. I wouldn’t expect to be taking down large game with this, BUT it will do some serious damage.

Husband likes the self-cocking mechanism and that the crossbow has the picatinny rails for mounting different sights, handles, lights, etc. The body of the crossbow is mostly a hard plastic composite material. The bow is metal. The rear sight that came with it is kind of cheap, but it functions. Considering it was only $50 and our use is completely target shooting, I’m extremely happy with the purchase. -Teresa

Trending Review: Not sure about people claiming broken in 3 shots? Instructions stink. But anyone that has strung a crossbow shouldn’t have trouble. Overpowered 193 fps on aluminum bolts. 250+ bolts plus no issues. Put it together right. Metal to rubber…to legs to back legs rubber. Tighten down. Re Tighten after 20 shots. Don’t play with the safety. Don’t play with the cock. Only cock before you shoot. Wax the string every 20 bolts. Wax the rail. Nothing will break in my experience. 50 ft within 2 inches to target. 75ft within 4 inches. I would rather get hit with a 9mm at 75ft than this bow with a broad head. Put together right and treated right, the crossbow has no design flaws that stick out. Wax wax wax the string. Put it together perfectly. Don’t bump the sight rail. It held by only one screw to plastic. -Laurence J R

Reassuring Review: So I’m giving the Bear X Desire XL 5 stars not because I think it’s the best pistol crossbow of its class. 5 Stars because it far outperforms anything I’ve shot for less than $100. I’ve attached a red dot scope and the accuracy is great. I get 4 to 6″ grouping from 60 ft away standing. I bought this to mount a fishing reel and use it for fishing. After using for the intended purpose, will return to update. You can get broad hunting heads for small game.

Though I’ve not used it for such, there’s no doubt this thing is killing a coyote or smaller. Highly recommend, Not a toy. Keep up with maintenance. Such as keeping your strings waxed. Keep screws tight. If you shoot arrows into trees or something hard, it will damage the arrow, and it will become compromised. They are cheap so you’ll want to buy better quality arrows. Some people have issues with arrows coming apart. Fix this by adding a drop of hot glue into the ends, then put back together. Also, you can strengthen arrows by taking them apart and filling them with hot glue.

However, they will be heavier, but this is also good for fishing arrows where you want more weight because this is a 50/60 lb draw. This crossbow is made of plastic, though it’s a high-quality plastic, I would not recommend putting a higher lb limb. You can do that with something like the Adder but not this. The one issue I see is I have the stock adjusted all the way out for better leverage of cocking. But imo if there’s a break or failure it will be here. That’s the weakest part of the crossbow. Hope this helps anyone thinking of purchasing..
Edit: I made the modifications for Bowfishing before the review posted. I have used it and was successful at hitting a fish, although I was not able to land it because I was using the line that came with the reel and it snapped on me. Will definitely upgrade Line to try again. -David Winebarger

5. Snake Eye Tactical Cobra-System Self-Cocking-Pistol Crossbow

Snake Eye Tactical Cobra System Self Cocking Pistol Crossbow

Highlight: This crossbow includes an easy cocking stock, automatic safety mechanism and fore grip with finger guard.

Constructive Review: This mini crossbow exceeded my expectations in every way. The build quality is excellent, with durable materials that feel sturdy yet lightweight. It’s surprisingly powerful for its size and very accurate, making it perfect for target practice or just having some fun. The design is sleek and easy to handle, with smooth loading and firing mechanisms. It’s a fantastic piece for both beginners and enthusiasts. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a compact, reliable, and exciting crossbow! -alfredo teixidor

Trending Review: As others have said, this is not a toy, it’s legit. I bought it to shoot Eurasian doves in my backyard. I haven’t shot any yet, just been practicing so far. But the bolt goes into my archery foam target up to the fletching from 15 yards, maybe farther.

It was as hard to string as everyone else said, even with 2 people, we were unable to do it. I ended up using a ratchet strap hooked to both ends of the bow, then wrapped around the pistol grip. That made it super easy to do by myself.

Very fun, highly recommend. -Michael Echelberger

Reassuring Review: Ok, I didn’t expect this thing to be this much fun. I’ve probably put 2-300 bolts through this so far, 1 thing to watch, every 20 or so shots check the set screw that holds the bow in. The string seems to be holding up ok, I’m curious to see how long it lasts. Accuracy? Well, kinda depends how good a shot you are and how good the crossbow is dialed in. My backyard is only big enough for 50ft shots, took me a bit to sight it in, but I can usually get a pretty good grouping from 50 ft. You can easily get dead on 25ft shots. Power? More than I expected. Not a toy. A lot of fun for 50 bucks, by far worth it. Just buy different darts. The ones it comes with won’t hold up for prolonged shooting. -JB
