Trending Review: This set was great for the whole family. We like to use these for when we go camping. I was about 900 yards from camp and the audio was a bit crackly when talking to the wife. When I was around 800 years i could hear them all very clearly. And both times were through dense trees and a few hills.
Only thing you got to watch out (but i knew this would happen) is that if someone else has these radios, and if you’re on the same channel, you can talk to random strangers. So just be careful if your kids are going to use them. there’s a lot of weirdos out there.

Reassuring Review: For the money they seem like a tremendous value. Could hear and be heard at home from the post office. The scale on the screen shot says it all. I don’t understand the monitor button. But the little light is a lot brighter than I had expected it to be. All items were in the box. 2 WTs, 2 Bats, 2 earpiece/mic with lanyard, and two charging stations. I’m not an expert or anything, but, to me, the range on these is remarkable. Compelled to share this info. Pictures don’t lie. It’s 80% forest with three small peaks and valleys along that scale. Trending Review: Midland – T10 X-TALKER. These are excellent quality and great value for the price (About $30 bucks for a pair). I use them to keep in touch with my young children around the neighborhood. These have high quality sound (for transmit and receive), reasonable price, nice small size and have the basic features I wanted; like the standard 22 channels (including 38 privacy codes; I don’t need more codes than that), call button, roger beep, scanning and weather channels. We live in an urban area city (buildings/homes/etc) and we get at least 1/4 mile range which, I would say is expected (I believe these are half a watt of output power) for the area we use them in. We use rechargeable NiMH batteries and battery life is also expected, basically if you are using them all day long, then at the end of the day, remove the batteries and recharge them. I have not tested how long it takes to fully drain battery, so I don’t know maybe it will last longer. -Victor Rodriguez
Reassuring Review: We bought these for our RV for when we are parking and backing with trees, etc. We also use it when we’re fishing in areas that have no cell service. I use lithium batteries in it. We’ve had them for a few months now and still going strong. They fit in the palm of your hand and transmit quite a distance. We’ve used them fishing along a river in the woods and I would say we were a good 1.5 to 2 miles from each other and they worked well. The purchase menu has a lot of delicious colors to choose from. The unit holds in one’s hand nicely for most any age person. The controls are easy to use. The user manual is good however, has the usual mislabels (i.e. calling it “batteries” whereas, it should say “cells”, etc.).
There are too many risks of explosion or fire with the Li and other type rechargeable batteries therefore, this user uses alkaline cells for the battery. This is especially true when traveling whereas, AA cells are very common and available plus, there may be commercial flight restrictions concerning the formentioned type of battery in electronic devices.
For (low end) Chinese junk they work well in using them for about a year under constant, 24-hour operation. One radio did fail and the “repair” was to whack it on the side reviling poor QC mostly likely in poor connections either on the PCB or other solder points. Actually, from dropping one unit accidentally, it still continued to work for months indicating the user may have been a fault for the mentioned failure. For tower (telecom work) or family use they are a good value; they are well worth the very low cost. Suggestion is to purchase several so you are not without communications when this happens.
The power E.R.P. fair to low performance so one should expect short coverage in obstructed areas, such as buildings and basements. For line-of-sight operations it may be possible for a mile or more coverage. The short antenna on the unit is the main cause for limited range which is typical for a FRS radios found on the market.
The battery saver is fantastic being it lasts 2-3 weeks between battery changes. That’s a far cry from the more expensive radios tested. One has to remember to press the PTT, then wait 1-2 seconds before saying something meaningful. This is especially true when using the tone squelch feature. Failure to observe this can lead to missing words heard at the far end causing user confusion. The problem is typical with most tone coded squelch radios. With some user discipline the issue is minimal.

Trending Review: Everyone commented on my 13 year old daughter and I ability to communicate. It worked throughout the boat except when we were on opposite ends of the ship. Other than that they worked great. Carnival has an app to communicate via text but it doesn’t ping you or ring. ($5 for text per person) So if you don’t look at the app you don’t know someone texted up. The walkie can ring or you hear a person talking.

Trending Review: These are not my first set of small radio walkie talkies, so I have some experience with them and this help me set my expectations. Our needs were specific with these in that my wife had foot surgery and has regular need to assistance from me throughout the day and night. As this is a long recovery (3 months) I felt like we needed to replace our failed set of radios that had finally died with something similar. I chose these and we have been very pleased.
She can easily get my attention before speaking with the call signal (sent by pressing the speak button twice rapidly) and then we communicate. We are both pleased with the clarity and volume for $20.00 radios. We also picked orange and black which is hard to lose…and the clip on the back goes on a pocket, belt, or collar quite easily. We have not used them between vehicles BUT we have used them between her being inside while I was outside and they worked well in spite of the fact that our house has foil faced insulation and virtually no radio signals go in or out through it.
Distance on our property might be an issue if I were to go farther afield, but I am staying close during this time. When I leave for short trips we simply switch to cell phones.
The only issue we face, as some have pointed out, is battery consumption. I do not really believe they are any worse than any of the other radios we have used. We turn them off when we are in the same room or if I am within earshot of her. Some days they are on constantly (until bed time) and we still get several days out of each set of 4 AAA batteries. Would it be nice if they had rechargeable battery packs? Sure, but at a $20.00 price point I do not see that happening. Once she is back on her feet later this summer I will take the batteries out of them, store them away in the office, until we have brief need of them again. They are great for two people matching switches and outlets to breakers on different floors for instance.

Trending Review: This little radio is extremely powerful and has a great battery life (multiple days of standby power if you enable power saving mode and don’t transmit) and it has a removable antenna so you can attach something like a Nagoya, Yagi, or custom coaxial antenna to it.
If you buy the extended battery or even just another standard battery, you’ll have more battery life than you know what to do with, unless you are constantly transmitting with VOX or you’re constantly listening to FM radio with the volume turned up!
The stock antenna is pretty good compared to the other more expensive Baofengs, but upgrading to a nagoya NA-771 removes a ton of the faint background hiss on both rx and tx, as well as increasing the tx range quite a bit. From my bench, I couldn’t really pick up any additional FM radio stations when scanning through the entire FM range using the Nagoya vs the stock antenna, but what I did notice was that every single station came through crystal clear after swapping the antenna, whereas before it would pick them all up but some stations definitely had poor reception unless I would walk all around the garage looking for a good signal path.
It has quite a few nice features but nothing digital, and doesn’t have true dual watch monitoring, but with TDR turned on for me I’m able to monitor two frequencies and pick which one I care about more so if they’re both active it will let me listen to the “preferred” frequency. It has dcs and ctcss codes for accessing those repeaters, and supports DTMF codes for dialing into Internet relay repeaters or echolink repeaters.
As far as ease of use, you will need the manual to decipher the different options in the settings menu. There are some websites out there that give a more detailed breakdown of the menu options and their descriptions, as well as youtube videos to demonstrate more complicated things like programming or connecting two Baofengs to make a mobile repeater. Both of those capabilities require a different cable, not included.
Finally, regarding programming, you DO NOT need to get the programming cable as you can do everything right from the radio. If you want to look up different frequencies of your local repeaters and store them in the memory channels, you can do that pretty quickly and easily right from the radio once you learn the flow. Where the programming cable comes in handy is when you want to add a hinge number of pre-programmed channels to the radio, but IMO there is no need for that. I tried it with all the virginia repeaters and found that only 1 or 2 ever had any traffic, even when I would go driving for hours and leave it on channel scan mode. Where I think the programming cable would come in handy is if you routinely traveled out of state (like from the east coast to the west coast) and you had a different set of frequencies and repeaters and settings for each location that you wanted to be able to swap between easily. When you go to the west coast you can just backup your east coast profile to save any changes you made or any new frequencies you saved, and then restore the west coast profile so you’re able to make changes and save any new frequencies you find there. Then when you’re ready to come back, just save the west coast profile to the computer and restore the east coast profile. -Judie Grablewski
