1. PENN Battle IV Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo

Highlight: It recovers at the rate of 22” | 56cm with every turn of the crank. The gear ratio is 5.2:1. Computer-cut CNC Gear Technology makes for butter-smooth operation.
Constructive Review: Enjoyed fishing with this rod, it has a nice bend to it and due to its flexibility can cast far. I mostly used it for popping, jigging, shark fishing and trolling, where it provided great sensitivity along with great control over the fish.
I also want to comment on the durability of the rod, over the two weeks I could fish, I threw this rod around, not cleaning it at all, and the reel is running as smoothly as it was when I got it. Overall, this rod is very versatile and can be used for anything from jigging to casting. I recommend NOMAD PANDERRA 8X BRAID LINE(50 or 65lb) as it is used this braid to catch an 18 kg barracuda. Also, the lure weight on the rod is from 20 to 65 g, I believe could be a bit higher. –Daniil
Trending Review: I purchased the Battle III LE with the 6000 Penn reel and 9 ft. rod. This is a quality combo at first glance. Smoot action and the bail opens and clicks close easily. I will update the post when I get to fish with it in a couple of months.
Now onto the shipping and the actual packaging of the rod and reel. I am amazed at how the rod tip was not broken as it was sticking out of the end of the box when I received it. Seriously, you have to do a better job of packaging this product. I guess it speaks to the durability of the tip and guides as they were in perfect shape and not even bent. -Kelly
Reassuring Review: Love these Penn Battle III LE’s and the Winn grips that are on them. Initially ordered a medium light 7’ 3000, liked it so much that I ordered an 8’ medium heavy 5000 and a 7’ medium 4000 while they are still available, knowing that the Battle IVs are coming out soon. The only thing that would make them better is if the hook keeper on the 7’ medium and medium light rods was a little bigger. They work fine, I would just prefer bigger, like the medium heavy 8’ rod has. –Lisa
2. St. Croix Rods Triumph Spinning Rod

Highlight: Nylon reel seat, nylon primary nut material & stainless steel secondary nut material. Premium cork handle for comfortable handling and a cork composite butt cap.
Constructive Review: I have the 5’6″ ultra light pole. If you do not match your line and drag to your pole, it will break. It is the fishing line that breaks the pole, not a stump or a fish.
If you go to St. Croix website, it has a chart for what pound test line is appropriate for each pole. For mine it was 4 to 6 lb line. I opted for a 4 lb line. Then you have to set your drag to 1/2 that or less, which for me was a 2 lb drag.
Then instead of breaking — the drag releases.
Braided line? Your pole will break. Fishing for bass with a pole rated for 4 lb test? Your pole will break. Using 20 lb line with a 10 lb drag? Your pole will break.
While it’s simple math, this much may be true: you may not be smart enough to know better.
For the small ultra light use 4 lb line and a 2 lb drag. There are handheld scales on Amazon you can use. -Michael A. Ward
Trending Review: I recently bought a 6-1/2 ft rod, light/fast. For me, the St. Croix has been excellent for trout fishing, all year long. If you buy such a high quality rod, then I would recommend that you pair it with the best spinner reel that you can get. These 2 components, will allow you to feel EVERY bump, from feeling the bottom of the bed, to the ever-slightest tap from the fish. A hard hit, and a successful hook set allow you to experience every bit of fight and pull from the fish. I love the light/fast, because even an average-sized fish will give you a handful of action. Each catch feels like a beast. –Stevie Ray
Reassuring Review: I fish a small river/large creek about 150 days a year. I had been using a St Croix 6′ 6″ ML Triumph until I made a stupid mistake and broke it. The replacement program will replace it for $70 + shipping, but that’s not far off a new one.
So I bought a 6′ ML Triumph this time. I like it a lot more than the old one. This one is easier to work in and around trees, and has plenty of backbone for hook sets.
It’s expensive (by my standards anyway), but I think it’s phenomenal. If you can afford it, it’s worth it. –S. Lux
3. Fenwick HMG Spinning Fishing Rod

Highlight: Powerlux 100 delivers a 13% *stronger and 8% **lighter weight rod while maintaining sensitivity and balance.
Constructive Review: I am a huge fan of Fenwick fishing rods and own several. I was extremely excited to see the Fenwick.
MODEL # HMG76L-MFS-2 on sale below the manufacturer’s normal price, so I ordered one. The rod arrived in the normal 2-day time. It is beautiful, has great action, light weight, and all. However, the person who packaged the rod into the square box shoved it in, putting excessive pressure on the guides and bending a few of them out of their normal alignment – still usable, but heartbreaking to see such a nice rod damaged. Given the difficulty with just having an easy way to email or talk to an Amazon customer service person about this, I will likely return it since I can’t trust the guides not to break on the first big fish I catch. –Tom
Trending Review: I have had this rod for a couple of months and have used it on a 5-day trip on the Buffalo River, AR, and a 2-week trip to the BWCA MN.
After the trip to AR, I bought a second one. I have several HMG rods and this one is typical Fenwick quality. The case is a great option and my Diawa BG 1500s fit perfectly in the case and I believe you could easily get a 2500 and possibly, a 3000 series reel in the case as well.
As far as fishability, the rod was plenty sensitive for detecting pickups of both Spotted and Smallmouth bass on our canoe trips. I caught close to 60 spotted bass in AR, and the two rods, caught close to 130 smallmouth in MN.
The fact it comes with a second tip is great. The M/L is probably closer to a M/ML and the Medium tip is a little heavier than a M/M, but that is subjective on my part.
I contacted Fenwick, to see if I could purchase the tips separately (spares) but alas, they don’t offer spare tips and that would be the only negative I can find and it is not rod related, but supply chain. –Mitch Steel
Reassuring Review: 7’6’light. Moderate action 2=8 lb line.
Got it yesterday, took it trout fishing at Lewiston Lake today. It is a flowing body of water with very strong trout, tasty too. I was looking for a few for the table. Landed 4, lost 3, missed at least 6 more, in about 3 hours. Nice afternoon.I paired this up with a Piscifun Carbon X 3000. They look great together, black on black, and weigh next to nothing. 13.1 oz filled with .18mm braided main line. It is a whisper.
This is my second HMG. I love the Alien handle, it is very comfortable both casting and fighting, as well as providing direct contact with the blank. It is very secure, with double lock downs.
Anyway, this has the kind of power to handle a very nice fish, one weighed 3 lbs and I’d be comfortable with a much larger fish, yet handle the very light leaders needed in this crystal clear water, the length of the rod being a great shock absorber, at the same time as it being sensitive enough to feel the bottom and the bite when drifting a crawler or egg pattern in a riffle.
I loved fishing with this rod. This won’t be my last HMG and that says what I want to say about it. It’s a dandy. –John Oswald
4. Ugly Stik Elite Spinning Fishing Rod

Highlight: Ugly Tuff One Piece Stainless Steel Guides Provide Maximum Durability And Eliminate Insert Pop-Outs.
Constructive Review: I do a lot of surf fishing and recently decided to get into inshore fishing, specifically bass. I purchased this rod on recommendation from a family member as a perfect beginner rod, and so far I must agree. First thing I noticed when opening it up was how light this is, thought it would be brittle but it has a very nice flex to it.
Took it out fishing at a local spot with a simple Texas rig and was surprised by how sensitive it is. I could feel when I was hitting a rock or weeds, but most importantly, I could feel the nibbles and bites. Sadly, due to my over eagerness to snap the rod back, I broke the line when I first got a bite.
Overall, after just a couple hours with this rod I am very pleased with it and would recommend it from a beginner’s point of view. -Alex I.
Trending Review: This is in no way a professional rod, but for everyday beater, and it is TOUGH, they are known for durability, and accidents to happen, and they make a really good product. My wife purchased the gx2 with the foam grips and I love cork so I went with this one and it’s great.
Only gripe would be the reel seat and cork had squeaking going on when I hooked a fish, easy remedy was some 2 part epoxy and some thread (it was at the bottom of the reel seat and the end cork. fixed the issue very quickly and easily. Still, I would buy another or another length or size when I feel the need to add to my arsenal of fishing rods. great everyday product! -Mister E.
Reassuring Review: Very light weight but tough. Casts smoothly with little effort. Nice comfortable grip. Very well balanced. Perfect mid-size rod for regular lakeside or seaside fishing. Good action, ultra sensitive. This will be my ultimate go-to rod. It makes fishing feel easier than it should be, even when landing heavier fish. I’ll be purchasing another one shortly. -Andrew Thomas
5. Berkley Lightning Rod Spinning Combo

Highlight: Spinning Combo offers sensitive performance and rugged durability at a great value.
Constructive Review: I just ordered 4 of these rods for my kids to use on the Kayaks. Didn’t want them to drop my expensive ones overboard but wouldn’t fret much if they dropped a $60 rig. They arrived today and I have to say that I’m amazed by my first impression of them. They are well crafted with good fit and finish. I ordered the medium-light models and they are pretty true in action with what I’d call ‘fast action’ tips. I can’t speak to performance yet, but have no reason to believe they won’t perform as well as they look. -Drake Otis
Trending Review: Aside from the fact that it came in a box 4 times too large and was not in my opinion sturdy enough to protect the product. The Rod & Reel came in tact with no damage and I took it out to the lake the next day and it worked like a charm. Had no issues using it and was even able to land some red fish and channel catfish with it. -Geoffery Blackwell
Reassuring Review: Excellent spinning, the quality is just wonderful. Very satisfied with the acquisition. I recommend purchasing. Thank you seller for fast delivery. -lazeryu
6. Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo

Highlight: 4 ball bearing system for smooth operation. Features 5 guides to provide durability and eliminate insert pop-outs during rough treatment.
Constructive Review: I use GX2 rods for ultralight trout fishing and medium bass fishing every week. I’ve yet to have one break and am impressed with the quality overall for the price. I have four of these rods, and I did unfortunately lose the top half of one of them due to casting a bit too hard. Make sure to give a little force when securing the pieces together and remind yourself that casting is more about the motion than power. -Timothy Lentz
Trending Review: I have been steady using this rod for 2 years now, all I can say is it’s the best all around rod. I’ve caught perch, catfish, even turtles (unintentionally) (personal fav) bass all kinds. I matched it with the braided line 30lb 150yards, works a charm. Never have any backlash. Anything that gets tangled is easily undone, I’ve used this in ponds, in lakes. You name it, I’ve used it. I’ve bought other rods as (play) rods if you will, and I always find myself going right back to my GX2, the cast is without a doubt the best in the market.
The rod splits into two if I need to take it somewhere. It’s lightweight but not as durable, this thing can pull some monsters. The biggest I pulled in was an 8lb, didn’t need a net, anything after you’ll need a net. The rod is one of the best things I am buying another as we speak, hence why I came back to write a review. Beyond amazing, between the cast, I get about 50 yards (pushing it with a weighted hook and that’s it) so the cast is smooth, nice and goes, the flexibility as you get bit, I mean you can feel every chop. And yes, you can pull up the cats, the picture above is some of many catches with this rod! Save yourself the time and money and buy this rod you’ll thank me later!! -Debbie Reynolds
Reassuring Review: Got this combo for a family vacation to the lake – my kids wanted to learn how to fish and I hadn’t picked up a rod in 25 years since I was a kid myself. Ugly Stik was a name I remembered from my childhood, and, while I know they aren’t a super premium brand, I trusted them more than the other generic stuff I found online for under $50 so I took a chance and bought it. No regrets.
It is exactly what I expected – a very functional, serviceable combo at a budget price. I’ve had it almost 2 seasons now and have landed dozens and dozens of largemouth on it. As I got back into fishing, I have slowly been upgrading my gear, and I appreciate many of the features that more expensive rods and reels offer. With that said, I don’t think you can spend a better $50 to get started with a combo.
This combo had no problem landing me many 1-3 pound fish, and it even landed my new PB bass – a massive 6 and a half pounder!!! For that alone, this combo will always be special to me and I feel satisfied I have already gotten great value from my purchase. Happy with the durability so far, but this isn’t a piece I expect to hand down to my children. If it were to break tomorrow, I’m happy with it, anything more is icing on the cake.
The real isn’t bad in terms of drag, smoothness, casting, etc. The weight of this combo is great and I like the balance. I’m a bank fisherman and need 2-piece rods. This one is as solid as any others I have and the real is better than some generics I have felt on similar combos. I’ve used lines ranging from 6lb-10lb, mono and braid, and lures tilted to the light side, 1/16-1/2. Not the combo I’d want for throwing half-ounce crankbaits all day, but if you’re using lighter lures and you’re on a tight budget, idk how you can do much better.
Good Luck & Happy Fishing!!! -Methew
7. Abu Garcia Vengeance Casting Fishing Rod

Highlight: LINE RATING, HEAVY POWER, FAST ACTION: The Vengeance is capable of handling the toughest of fishing challenges. Lure rating of 3/8 -1 1/2 oz.
Constructive Review: Got the Abu Garcia Vengeance heavy 7’3 paired with a Lew’s 8:3:1 LFS fast reel for about 140 so if you’re building your own combo I’d definitely recommend checking out Bass Pro Shop or Lew’s because the reel is nice!
The rod itself is a little heavier than my Abu Garcia Roxanne 7:1:1, so it did take a little getting used to, however, I’m casting way further now and the handle is super comfortable.
As far as strength/ sensitivity goes, I was able to crush my new combo with this 5/6 lb bass! The tip is super sensitive and when you feel that fish hit, you really feel it. Fought for like 3 minutes and saw this pole really get bent when I landed the bass and it held up like a champ! You can’t go wrong with this rod! -Wasabi
Trending Review: This is my second purchase through Amazon for an Abu Garcia vengeance rod, love the first one so I bought another one for a new bait caster reels that I have coming, I must say you can’t go wrong with this rod and it showed up in perfect condition and well packaged, this is the best ride you can buy for the money, just got a 9 lbs. 8 oz. bass on my original rod last week couldn’t be more happy with the action and the way it performs. -Christopher Brown
Reassuring Review: I use this on a baitcaster reel and I can’t tell you how much I love how light this is. The grips at the bottom help with leverage on casting. I have caught a few 2lb bass with it but nothing big fight yet, like a pike or pickerel, so I gave durability 4 stars. I have 2 of these rods now, a 7′ and a 7’6″. -Jason Russell
8. KastKing Perigee II Spinning & Casting Fishing Rods

Highlight: You’ll fish all day without fatigue and have power to spare because Perigee II fishing rods offer high-density EVA handle and ergonomic graphite reel seats, making fishing fun!
Constructive Review: This rod is quick, reactive, and sensitive. I’ve fished with rods 3 times the price and never got the feel I got from this.
I’ve got 2 now! In like 2 weeks! I loved it so much. First one I bought was a 2 piece, it came with a medium and medium heavy tip! Who does that!!?!? Who’s that considerate? Apparently KastKing!
Loved it so much, I got the Medium light in a one piece. Seriously. I think most every freshwater fisherman needs the medium light. This should be a staple for any angler. It’s .4 oz lighter than the 2 piece. Trust me. It makes a difference. I’d order a third if I can catch the sale again.
Anyways. Bought this to use for drop shotting and jerk baits. Planning on doing pretty well at this tournament this weekend. Wish me luck. MLF… here we go! -Kraken
Trending Review: These are by far my favorite fishing rods. I have 4 total Perigee II fishing rods, one spinning and three casting. They are all med power fast action. They are very versatile and the best rods for the money for sure. I have gotten lucky and find returns for sale for less than $40 and they perform like $100 + rod. I have other KastKing rods and every one of them easily performs at double to triple their cost to buy. -Schultz
Reassuring Review: I have a few KastKing products and this might be my favorite one. This rod is great. I fish either from the bank or in a canoe, and I throw mossssstly soft plastics. I fish in NH mostly for largemouth but I’ll hook a pickerel or smallie here and there.
I love this rod because it’s got a nice fast action, I love fast action, and it’s got great backbone. I’m usually throwing a weightless, Texas rigged trick worm, or soft plastic jerkbait directly into lilies. I also love a 1/4oz jig head with a 2” gulp minnow on it for twitching off the bottom. Since I’m on the bank or in a canoe, I’m not very vertical…meaning if I hook a fish far out I usually have a lot of lilies to get through before I land it. This rod has plenty of backbone for me to do just that. I’m typically using 15 pound braid with an 8 or 6 pound fluorocarbon leader tied in with a uni/uni knot. I rarely break off, and it’s only if I snag a log or something immovable. The rod is about as lightweight as you’d expect from a carbon fiber rod, and it has great balance with my 2000 size Shimano on it. I’ve casted up to maybe 4 oz in it before with no issue, but I probably wouldn’t recommend going too far over the listed weight too often. The only reason I say this is because of the fast tip, it doesn’t load up so much as something more moderate. Overall I’ve loved all my Kastking products and will continue buying them. The unfortunate end to this review is I have contractors in my building, and came home to this rod in 4 pieces the other day. I remembered to write this review because I’ll likely purchase the same rod.
I went 5/5 on value and lightweight but only 4 on craftsmanship because nothing particularly STOOD OUT. It’s just a great rod. -Michael
